Voices in eMobility - What if roads could power vehicles?

An interview with Sam Saravanan, CEO and founder of GPropel

GPropel’s vision of battery-free, wirelessly propelled transport might just be the quiet revolution we need.

It’s not every day you meet someone who wants to change how the world moves — without batteries, chargers, or even engines. But that’s exactly what Sam Saravanan is working on. As the founder of GPropel, he’s developing a wireless, contactless propulsion system that uses specially enabled roads to move vehicles — not just EVs, but nearly any vehicle — without stopping, charging, or carrying heavy battery packs.

While it sounds like something pulled from a sci-fi novel, the idea is startlingly simple: install a G-Kit retrofit under a car, build out roads embedded with Wireless Power Utilization (WPU) technology, and you’ve got seamless, zero-emission transport that doesn’t rely on the battery-dominated EV model we know today.

Nexxt Industry sat down with Sam to talk about the genesis of the idea, the validation from industry insiders, and what it will take to turn this vision into a reality.

From mining megaprojects to motion on demand

Sam isn’t a recent convert to engineering. With over 30 years of experience managing large-scale projects in energy and mining, he brings a rare blend of technical insight and hands-on delivery. But it was his curiosity about emerging wireless mobility solutions — particularly from innovators like Electreon, and projects like Arena del Futuro in Italy or Smartroad Gotland in Sweden, that pushed him to think even further.

“When I learned about road-based wireless charging systems, I was impressed,” Sam says. “But I also started wondering, could there be an even simpler, more cost-effective way that works for more types of vehicles?”

That line of thinking became the seed for GPropel’s Wireless Power Utilization (WPU) system, which moves away from energy storage altogether. Instead of charging a battery, GPropel’s roads supply power directly to a small retrofit called G-Kit installed under the vehicle, propelling it in real time — no engine, no battery, no drivetrain.

Sam explains. “You don’t need to store the electricity — you just use it as it flows. That’s what we’re doing with transport: direct utilization.”

WPU vs. WPT — and why it matters

It’s important to understand the difference here. Many wireless mobility systems today work with Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) — which means transferring electricity between coils to charge batteries while the vehicle is either stationary or in motion. GPropel’s approach is Wireless Power Utilization (WPU) — which skips the charging step entirely.

It’s a direct propulsion system, and that has some pretty big advantages. For starters:

  • Vehicles don’t need batteries, which means they’re lighter and more efficient,
  • There's no need for charging downtime, so it's 24/7 operation,
  • Infrastructure costs are lower than conventional WPT solutions.

The G-Kit (which is 25kgs x 2.5 meter length) can be retrofitted to almost any vehicle under 5 tons, meaning it’s as applicable to a grocery trolley as it is to a school bus!

Complementing today’s tech, not replacing it

For a concept this ambitious, the implementation strategy is refreshingly grounded. Sam knows the idea will challenge existing players — especially Charge Point Operators — but he’s not trying to replace them overnight.

“This isn’t about eliminating EVs or current tech,” he explains. “You can still drive your car normally. But once you're on a GPropel-enabled road with a  G-Kit, it becomes zero-emission — just put it in neutral, and it moves.”

Early deployments are planned in closed environments — ports, warehouses, industrial yards — before expanding into semi-public areas like campuses, airports, and retirement villages. Real-world trials are the next step, and Sam is actively looking for partners to help run a 30–100 meter demo with a full-size vehicle.

Bold ideas deserve strategic marketing

Startups like GPropel have the potential to reshape the way we think about zero-emission transport. Such groundbreaking tech needs a smart go-to-market strategy.

A new idea in a fast-moving world

Technological breakthroughs like GPropel challenge today’s norms — and that’s how real progress happens. In a fast-moving sector like eMobility, new concepts don’t replace the old overnight; they evolve the system step by step.

Most of the smartest innovations don't promise instant revolutions. They show how new technologies add flexibility, lower barriers, and fit into the bigger picture of sustainable transport.

GPropel follows that mindset: a gradual rollout starting in ports, warehouses, and controlled environments. It’s about adding possibilities—not tearing down what’s already working.

Even as a small, family-led startup, GPropel has a big vision. As Sam says: “We want to make cars four times lighter, powered by the roads beneath us.”

This approach slashes energy demand at its core, rethinking mobility from the ground up. One day, he hopes cities will proudly display: "Zero Emission Zone — Powered by GPropel. Because this isn’t just about technology — it’s for everything that breathes: people, animals, plants, and the Earth itself. A real move toward sustainability.”

Whether GPropel becomes a global platform or sparks future innovation, it’s another reminder that true change in eMobility comes quietly, thoughtfully, and with conviction.
